BROKEN MOUTH | Lee’s Homestyle - Los Angeles, CA (DTLA)
Work wife heard about Broken Mouth somewhere and really wanted to try it. Since I didn't bring lunch, I told her we should go check it out.
The restaurant was very small with limited seats. The chef was from Hawaii and wanted to share the love of Hawaii fusion food with the LA locals. There were also bar seats available with kitchen view, but the actual cooking was blocked by the tall wall. I was a little sad.
The menu had decent selections and was designed for the lunch crowds. We decided to share our food and got spam musubi, chicken sandwich, and shrimp fritters.
The musubi was made with purple rice and it tasted good with seaweed seasoning in between the rice and spam. The purple rice was definitely eye candy but not much difference texture wise. Pretty solid as an appetizer.
The chicken sandwich used chicken breast, topped with pickled carrots, red onion, cranberries, and house special hot sauce. We also added avocado mash to it. It wasn't bad but it just didn't have the WOW factor to it.
The shrimp fritters came with garlic butter shrimp, purple rice, and potato mac salad. The shrimp was actually really good, crispy and garlicky. If there's only one thing to order, this would be it.
Overall experience was decent. Service was slow but friendly, the food tasted good. If you are ever interested, I would suggest call ahead for to go order due to small space.
